What is a workplace micro market?

An open-shelf breakroom store, run by your operator.

A workplace micro market is a small, open-shelf retail space inside your breakroom — snacks, drinks, fresh food, and frozen all in one place — with a self-checkout kiosk where your team pays for what they pick up. The format has been growing inside US workplaces since the early 2010s and is now a mainstream offering across vending operators (see NAMA, the industry trade association).

There’s no glass-front machine to drop product through. Items sit on real shelves and in commercial coolers, the way you’d see at a small convenience store. Your team grabs what they want and checks out at the kiosk with a card, mobile pay, or a market account.

We design the layout, install the equipment, stock it, monitor what’s selling, and run every service call. You don’t write a check; your team pays for what they take. For qualifying closed-population sites of 100+ on-site daily, the program is fully no-cost.

What’s in a micro market

Four zones. One open-shelf store.

Most micro market builds combine four equipment zones in one space. We design the layout to fit your breakroom footprint and your team’s actual habits — not a templated cookie-cutter.

Who micro markets work for

Closed-population sites of 100+ on-site daily.

Micro markets only work in spaces where the same group of people use the breakroom day after day — that’s how the open-shelf, self-checkout model stays accountable.

  • Manufacturing plants, distribution centers, logistics hubs
  • Healthcare campuses and senior-living communities
  • Multi-tenant office buildings (Class A & B)
  • Auto dealerships with employee + customer foot traffic
  • Higher-ed campuses and university residence halls
  • High-end residential and luxury apartment communities
  • Any single-employer workplace with 100+ on-site daily
Who they don’t work for

Open-public sites and event venues.

Micro markets don’t fit any space where the daily population isn’t a known, stable group. The open-shelf, self-pay model relies on a closed community to stay accountable.

  • Hotels, motels, hospitality with rotating guests
  • Public community centers and rec facilities
  • Event venues, concert halls, sports arenas
  • Retail with public foot traffic
  • Smaller workplaces under 100 on-site daily

For sites that fit those shapes, traditional vending machines are a better program — same operator, same family-owned service.

We use Bottoms Up at three of our manufacturing locations. They are absolutely amazing!! They offer a wide variety of options and will tailor it to your needs. Even when I explained some issues we’ve had in the past with employees not taking care of things they had solutions so we could offer the vending machines at each location. Extremely responsive when there is an issue or a jam. They also monitor what is being sold more of to change the stock to ensure we are never out. They have never missed a delivery and have gone above and beyond. They are absolutely extraordinary!!! Highly recommend!!

Product mix

What’s stocked, in plain English.

We tune the mix to what your team is actually reaching for — not a template. Categories below are the broad shape; the specific items shift over time.

Snacks

Salty, sweet, and healthier options. Single-serve and bigger bags.

Cold Drinks

Bottled water, soft drinks, juice, sparkling water, energy, premium coffee.

Fresh Food

Wrapped sandwiches, wraps, salads, fresh fruit, dairy, deli items.

Frozen

Entrees, breakfast items, ice cream novelties.

Coffee Bar

Single-cup brewers and supplies — usually paired alongside.

Healthier Options

Plant-based, allergen-aware tagging when it’s useful, lower-sugar, lower-sodium.

One thing to know: our menu shifts. Suppliers change, seasons change, your team’s tastes change. We’re constantly adding and rotating — not everything we offer is shown above, and not everything shown is always in stock.

For a reference catalog of what we currently carry across the network, see our full product list. When we talk, we’ll walk through what’s currently available and what fits your site.

Industries we serve

Closed-population workplaces across the tri-state.

Each industry has a different rhythm. We tune the equipment mix, the restock frequency, and the product categories to how your team actually uses the space.

Common questions

Workplace micro markets — frequently asked questions

What is a workplace micro market?

A workplace micro market is an open-shelf, self-checkout breakroom store. Snacks, cold drinks, fresh food, and frozen all sit on real shelves and in commercial coolers (no glass-front machine in between). Your team picks what they want and pays at a touchscreen kiosk with a card, mobile pay, or a market account.

The operator (us) designs the layout, installs the equipment, stocks the catalog, monitors sales, and handles every service call. The site doesn’t write a check — your team pays for what they buy at the kiosk.

How does a workplace micro market work day-to-day?

Same flow every visit: walk in, grab what you want from the shelves and coolers, scan it at the kiosk, pay, walk out. No vending machine, no waiting, no jams. The kiosk handles tax, accepts most payment methods, and tracks what’s selling so the operator can adjust the mix over time.

From your facilities team’s side, there’s almost nothing to do — we monitor stock levels remotely and our drivers restock on a route schedule. If something breaks, we get an alert and a tech rolls.

Is the micro market service really free for our business?

For qualifying closed-population sites of 100+ on-site daily — yes. We supply the shelving, coolers, kiosk, and software at no cost. We install. We stock. We service. Your team pays for what they buy from the kiosk; you don’t write a check.

Smaller sites are sometimes a fit too with a different program shape — usually traditional vending instead. Tell us about yours and we’ll be straight about whether a no-cost micro market works.

What size workplace fits a micro market?

The sweet spot is 100+ employees on-site daily, single-employer or closed-tenant, with a stable known population. The open-shelf, self-pay model relies on the same group of people using the space day after day to stay accountable.

If your site has fewer people on-site daily, or rotating public traffic, traditional vending machines are usually a better fit — same operator, same family-owned service, just different equipment.

Micro market vs vending machines — which one is right for our site?

Micro markets win on selection (more shelf real estate, fresh food, frozen) and on the team-experience side (no glass, no jams, easier grab-and-go). They need closed-population, 100+ on-site daily, and roughly 80–150 sq ft of breakroom space.

Vending machines win on smaller footprints (one to a few machines fit anywhere), on sites under 100 on-site daily, and on locations with rotating or public foot traffic where open shelves wouldn’t stay accountable.

For a deeper breakdown, see our micro market vs vending machines guide.

What products do you stock in micro markets?

Broad shape: snacks (salty, sweet, healthier), cold drinks (water, soft drinks, juice, sparkling, energy, premium coffee), fresh food (wrapped sandwiches, wraps, salads, fresh fruit, dairy), frozen (entrees, ice cream novelties), and a coffee bar that usually pairs alongside.

Specific items shift with season, supplier availability, and what your team is actually reaching for. Our menu is constantly being adjusted — not everything we offer is on a marketing page, and not everything on a marketing page is always in stock. For a snapshot of what we currently carry, see our full product list; ask us for the current available list when we talk and we’ll walk through what fits your site.

How do you handle theft and loss in an open-shelf market?

Three layers. First: closed-population sites — only known employees can use the space, which dramatically reduces shrink versus open-public retail. Second: kiosk software with built-in inventory tracking, exception reporting, and account-based payment options. Third: cameras at the market are standard, and we work with your facilities team on signage and program norms during install.

In practice, well-run workplace micro markets see shrink in the low single digits — comparable to or better than traditional employee cafeterias.

Can we mix programs — vending + micro market + coffee?

Yes. That’s actually the most common multi-room build: a vending bank in one space, a micro market in the main breakroom, and a coffee bar — all run by the same operator on the same service schedule. Full-service vending, office coffee, and ice cream all pair naturally with the micro market.

Where do you operate?

We’re headquartered in Posen, IL with hubs in Springfield, IL and Kenosha, WI. We route across Chicagoland (Chicago, Cook County, the collar counties), downstate Illinois through Springfield, southeast Wisconsin (Milwaukee, Madison, Kenosha, Racine), and across Indiana (Indianapolis metro, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend). For the full list of cities, see our service areas page.
